Proof in Different Areas of Knowledge

Azer Akhmedov
Professor of Mathematics, North Dakota State University, Fargo ND

Abstract: What does it mean to prove something? To what extend do we want evidence to support our beliefs? Can a proof be totally based on evidence? We will make a historical journey into the concept of proof in mathematics and discuss some modern (and postmodern) trends within the mathematical sciences. Then we will compare mathematical proof with the notion of proofs in natural sciences, historical sciences and law.
